The annual Black Friday is around the corner and that also means some new vinyl will be hitting the crates! With the intention to support local independent businesses, Record Store Day again put together a list split into ‘RSD FIRST’ and ‘RSD EXCLUSIVE’ category – like we have seens already in the past.

In this article we want to shed some light on all the Hip Hop releases that will be dropped on RSD Black Friday.

All titles from the list are expected to be published on November 26th. However for various reaons there can be delays for certain releases. Good news is for the following list there is only one title that might not make it to the actual event date but will definitely come within near future. But let’s get into it…

Pete Rock is without a doubt one of the most important figures in the genre. With a music catalogue from the early 90’s up until now he is one of the most consistent artists holding down the culture with various own releases and also tons of productions for plenty of other rappers.

Being part of the game for some time the New York legend decided to start his own imprint in 2019 called ‘Tru Soul Records’. On Record Store Day the same year he celebrated the launch of his imprint with the release of the Instrumental LP ‘Return Of The SP1200’ – an ode to the famous sampler that revolutionized the Hip Hop scene.

Meanwhile Pete Rock was working on ‘Return Of The SP1200 Volume 2’ and is now ready to be dropped. Again the LP will be an exclusive for RSD 2022 – pressed on red colored vinyl.

In 2015 Snoop Dogg started recording his 14th studio album ‘Coolaid’. One year later it was released by Doggy Style Records and eOne Music.  But until this day the album is only available digitally. Now for the first time it will be printed on vinyl as a double LP – lime green colored.

The title comes as RSD First although the hype sticker says limited edition. So probably will be available again one day… In some kind of different variant.

Next one is a mind altering demented lesson in beats! The Madlib Medicine Show was a series of 13 albums across several genres that were released throughout 2010-2011. For the eleventh release ‘Low Budget High Fi Music’ Madlib kept it straight Hip Hop with a fine selection of features guests like: Guilty Simpson, MED, A.G., MC Roc D or Madlib’s brother Oh No.

In January 2011 the first vinyl release came as limited edition with additional bonus beats housed inside a special sleeve. One month later the official 28-song album with the porcupine front cover was released.

However for both releases there are only a few higher priced copies left for sale. Therefore the RSD Black Friday reprint comes at just the right time. Madlib will be dropping another 5000 copies on own his own label Madlib Invazion.

A little drawback though. Seems like the reissue will be shortened to 24 songs. Compared to previous versions the upcoming re-release is planned to be pressed as single LP.

The RSD drop comes in porcupine belly colored vinyl with the distinctive cover and features the original hype sticker from the limited first release.

Also exclusively on RSD Erick and Parrish Making Dollars! After their previous album in 1999 the New York Hip Hop duo went through some well known trials and tribulations. After nine years they finally reunited for their 2008 project ‘We Mean Business’. Making it their first and only record on their own label EP Records. Moreover until this day it is their seventh and last official album as a duo. Although some time ago they actually announced a new album named ‘Big Business’ but no release date in sight.

Just like all their work ‘We Mean Business’ is mainly produced by Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith themselves. However for this record the two decided to also work with other producers such as 9th Wonder, Tyrone Fyffe or DJ Honda. Besides that there are quite some big names on the the feature list. Overall this album is put together very well creating a very nice throwback Hip Hop vibe.

The only vinyl version is out of print since release and only a handful expensive copies left to buy. In cooperation with RBC Records.. EP Records will be presenting another 2000 brandnew copies as limited edition pressed on red & black splattered vinyl.

Record Store Day list wouldn’t be complete without some new Czarface stuff to dig! That’s why Get On Down decided to extend the Czarface collector’s catalog with a special release of three songs distributed on 3″ vinyl – only to be played on 3-inch record players!

Each song comes separate with the characteristical Czarface cover art that the Hip Hop supergroup is known for. All three releases are exclusives – limited to 2000 copies per drop:

One of the cuts is ‘Nautical Depth’. The song is from the 2018 album Czarface Meets Metal Face and was the first song they recorded for the collaborative project with MF DOOM.

‘The Czarlaac Pit’ was chosen from the latest album ‘Czarmageddon!’ which was released this year. The Song features Frankie Pulitzer who dropped a verse right in between Inspectah Deck’s parts. In 2021 Frankie Pulitzer was introduced to the scene as Facepuller on the track ‘Today’s Special’ – a song that was part of the soundtrack Czarface did for Marvel’s movie ‘Venom 2’.

At first it caused a little confusion who the feature guest is. Some used to hype Frankie Pulitzer as up-and-coming MC. Later it turned out to be Tom Hardy.

More likely to be known for movies like Mad Max – Fury Road, The Revenant, The Dark Knight Rises or Venom apparently. Seems like the actor had some ambitions as a rapper before he started his movie career. The connection between him and Czarface probably kicked off after they did the movie deal.

After a long hiatus the RZA is back with some new music! For the last decade the Wu-Tang mastermind mainly focused on his movie career and living life as an entrepreneur. Apart from having some projects outisde the Hip Hop cosmos, RZA only added some movie soundtracks to his catalog. But recently the abbot decided it is time to carry on the legacy with the release of ‘Digital Potions’.

In 2021 RZA presented the song ‘Pugilism’ produced by DJ Scratch and announced to continue the narrative that began with the 1998 album Bobby Digital In Stereo. The song was believed to be part of the new project but somehow ended up on the ‘Saturday Afternoon Kung Fu Theater’ LP.

There is not too much info about ‘Digital Potions’. The record comes as RSD First print although hype sticker states limited edition. It is safe to say that it will be printed on 180g black vinyl housed inside a picture gatefold sleeve.

With more to come from down south! Chris Travis started out in 2012 as a rapper/producer creating his own lane. Over 20 Mixtapes and 5 albums later he became a household name within the rap genre claiming lots of commercial success. But so far there was only one project of his catalog released on vinyl. Therefore the latest 2022 album ‘Art Of Destruction’ will now get its first time on vinyl.

RBC Records  is coming with their 4th drop for this upcoming RSDBF. The record will be limited to only 1500 copies – printed on colored vinyl to fit the cover.

Next up is a fan favourite that’s been long awaited… In 2008 Joe Budden was in need of feature guests for a track he was working on. That’s when the heavy hitters Royce da 5’9”, Crooked I and Joell Ortiz stepped into scene. The song ‘Slaughterhouse’ was made which eventually resulted in the decision to continue the collaboration as a group under the same name.

Besides having solo careers and various other project individually, the supergroup still managed to release two great albums during 2009-2012. The debut, titled ‘Slaughterhouse’ as well, hit a pretty good sound of Hip Hop’s mid 00’s and was critically acclaimed of the audience.

For that reason the first album is finally available on vinyl for the first time, pressed as solid double LP. A massive drop of 3500 copies is expected to hit the crates.

Another gem on the list is the Instrumental version of ‘Yancey Boys’ with untouched beats by J Dilla! Originally the album marks the debut of Detroit artist Illa J. The project was released on ‘Delicious Vinyl’ 2 years after death of his older brother J Dilla in 2006.

The instrumentals were chosen from the wide music catalog that Dilla has left… Mainly speaking about left over beats from the time period of 1995 through ‘98 where he was producing on the second album of The Pharcyde. (Just to name one of the various projects J Dilla was working on.) Although the term ‘left over’ does not give justice when it comes to beats produced by Jay Dee. Let’s say unused for later purpose…

Since Delicious Vinyl was not only the label for Illa J’s debut but also the label where The Pharcyde released their first two albums, everything made total sense. Kinda as an ode to J Dilla they used the instrumentals for the first album of his younger brother Illa J who himself became a well respected artist in the game.

But moreover to honour the legacy of J Dilla they released ‘Yancey Boys Instrumentals’ as stand-alone vinyl release. The double LP was available the same year with reprints in 2013, 2018, 2019.

Today it’s almost unavailable. There are only a few higher priced used copies left on the market. That being the case Delicious Vinyl will be presenting another reissue exclusively on four random color variants.

Out of print since 1988, the first album from Kid ‘N Play also needs to mentioned to complete the list. The entire discography of this group is produced by Hurby Luv Bug who also was the producer of Salt-n-Pepa. In the late 80’s the duo was quite popular charting off with a positive pop sound in their music which ultimately led into acting for the two.

Select Records will now re-release their debut as limited edition on white opaque vinyl.

And last but not least we have Tommy Boy’s Baddest Beats. The New York City record label that put on a lot of artists, and therefore owns the rights to quite some classic songs from Hip Hop’s golden age, put together a Compilation LP.

The record features some of the greatest hits from: Queen Latifah, House Of Pain, Digital Underground, Stetsasonic, Coolio (2x), K7, Apache, Naughty By Nature (2x).

The Compilation was never released before and is now being dropped for the first time as ‘RSD First’ on 140g black vinyl.

Obviously the Black Friday list across all genres is usually shorter compared to the regular RSD date. But when it comes to Hip Hop it is looking pretty big. 18 releases in total will be hitting the stores on November 25th.
